VSI (Velocity Sync Index) – Simple Explanation for Basketball Minds
VSI is a measure of how well a team is moving together in rhythm.
Think of it like this:
When a team is playing with great flow, everyone is moving at the right speed, in the right direction, at the right time. The ball and players feel connected — cuts are timed perfectly, passes hit people in stride, and the whole team moves like one unit instead of five individuals.
That’s high VSI.
In Simple Basketball Terms
- High VSI = The team is “in sync.” Movement looks smooth, effortless, and dangerous. Transition is fast but controlled. Cuts and screens happen at the perfect moment. The offense feels like it’s flowing naturally.
- Low VSI = The team is “out of sync.” Players are moving at different speeds. Cuts are mistimed. Everyone looks a step slow or a step early. The offense feels clunky, forced, and easier to defend.
What VSI Actually Looks At
- How fast players are moving
- Whether their directions are coordinated (e.g., one player cutting while another fills the spot smoothly)
- How well the whole group stays connected during transition and half-court sets
- Court data which illuminates the relation of player actions, speed, and team patterns which manifest into results
Why It Matters
Teams with consistently high VSI tend to:
- Score more efficiently
- Play faster without turning the ball over
- Look “in rhythm” even against good defenses
- Win more games, especially in the playoffs
